San Sebastian Bay-'La Concha' Beach

Guipuzcoa(*), Vizcaya(*) and Alava(*) are the three provinces that form the Spanish side of the Basque Country (the Pyrénées-Atlantiques - Aquitaine Region form the French side)

There is no shortcut to describe the beauty of Gipuzcoa. Deep green mountains decorated with scattered traditional country houses, surrounded by flocks and tree, that give the illusion of being hanged from the hills.

The breathtaking scenery, combined with its rich history, traditions, and extraordinary gastronomic variety make an excellent combination for agro-tourism.

(*) Gipuzkoa, Biscaia and Araba, are the corresponding names of the provinces in Euskera (Basque).
In many local bibliographies you will find these provinces written in the basque language..

Our Best Lodging Experience in Guipuzcoa

Sosola Baserria (Eibar)

If we are to rate the best place we stayed in Guipuzcoa, there is no doubt that we will choose Sosola Baserria declared a historic monument dating back to the 16th century. Located in Eibar the house is only a 40 minutes drive from San Sebastian taking A8 Exit 15. Eibar is a small industrial town with a population of aproximately 27,000+.

Driving in direction to 'Amaņa' neighborhood, there is a small road that goes up the steep hills of Mount 'Urko';, but the drive up is totally paved. If you drive a manual shif cart, just stay in 1st gear and be patient. After a 5 minutes and 1.5Km (<1 mile) drive, you will divise the unmistakeable structure of Sosola.

When you get there you will think that you had travelled back in time. The 13th century original structure was carefully restored and remodeled several times (15h and 16th century). During its history, the building had suffered three partial fires and in every ocassion the structure was expanded, but observing its true character . Today, extended from its original structure, Sosola offers the up most comfort with style in 4 double bedrooms and large living room area. Having some agropastoral activities, the owners also produce their tradicional bread, cheese, cider and mermelades, all organic. Last and not least important, breakfast is served in the terrace with a wonderful view, making of it a unique experience to relax and enjoy the home made food.

Peines del Viento (Tip)

(Comb of Winds)- If you are in San Sebastian, and walking thru "La Concha" Beach, in the further west end, there is a structure that at fist sight will look as any other place to walk and look at the sea. This one has a couriosity in the way that was built. You will notice vents/holes in the floor, that at regular intervals, (as frequent as waves are) will blow a strong wind that will tickle your senses.

'El Parador' - Hondarribia (tip)

This is another unique place that you cannot miss. This medieval castle has the character of a few. Huge reception hall with a variety of ammenities that are the perfect spot for your special event. Its strategic location on the cliff, reminds us of old movies where the guest looks through his/her room's window and see the rocks and splashing waves 300 mts (330 yds) stright down...

Unfortunately AgroTravels was not able to stay during the visit to Hondarribia as the hotel was at full capacity... but we will get back to complete our review. In the meantime if you are around the area, do not miss it.
